The most excellent historie of the Merchant of Venice with the exxtreame cruelitie of Shlocke the Jewe.
The most excellent historie of the Merchant of Venice with the exxtreame cruelitie of Shlocke the Jewe.
This highly entertaining adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, directed by Ukrainian-born, Jewish theater artist Igor Golyak, is a wild ride that takes a startling and tragic turn, leaving the audience stunned and unable to stop the inevitable and unbearable consequences. Starring Richard Topol as Shylock with a stellar ensemble cast, this is Shakespeare for our time — a full force experience, urgent, deeply human, and full of questions.
The Merchant of Venice is one of two productions presented by MART Foundation as part of ARLEKIN in Residence at Classic Stage Company. Click here for information and tickets to Our Class.

About Producers
MART Foundation is an American nonprofit organization that produces and supports contemporary performing arts programs globally. With a special focus on coproductions, MART coproduced the restaging of Sharon Eyal’s Sara for New York-based Gibney Company, Kirill Serebrennikov’s Outside with The Avignon Festival, and a digital version of the Song of Songs (SOS) cantata for the Baryshnikov Art Center. MART presented several music concerts at Carnegie Hall, supported a new premieres program at the Israel Festival, and the tour of NDT 2 in Israel. Currently, MART is producing Akram Khan’s first full-length duet with renowned artists from the world of classical ballet. By curating an inventive and varied arts program, MART strives to showcase the very best of contemporary theater, music, and dance.
Arlekin Players Theatre was founded by Artistic Director Igor Golyak in 2009, and launched its (zero-G) Virtual Theater Lab in 2020. Arlekin recently produced The Orchard featuring Jessica Hecht and Mikhail Baryshnikov, and received worldwide acclaim, including two New York Times Critic’s Picks, for their virtual projects during the pandemic, including WITNESS, State vs Natasha Banina and chekhovOS /an experimental game/. Arlekin received multiple Elliot Norton Awards for productions of The Stone and The Seagull. A company of immigrants, Arlekin has toured internationally, and performs works that play on the ideas of cross-culture, home, and traditions, challenging the idea of nationality, and finding common themes that unite. This season, Arlekin is producing multi-media staged readings in partnership with Worldwide Ukrainian Play Readings and the Center for International Theatre Development (CITD), presented by Lincoln Center and The Huntington Theatre. Arlekin launched #Artists4Ukraine in 2020 to raise funds for humanitarian aid and stand in solidarity with artists in Ukraine.
